Pat Cummins Expected to Feature a Significant Contribution in Ashes Series

Australian cricket captain

The Australian skipper has claimed over 300 dismissals in 71 Test matches with an impressive average.

The Australian selection chief the selector has confirmed that skipper Cummins will be a central figure in the forthcoming historic rivalry.

There were concerns that the veteran bowler might sit out due to a persistent back stress problem that had not yet healed.

Initial reports from the squad suggested no definitive call had been made regarding whether he would play, with the extended contest scheduled to begin on 21 November in Western Australia.

The selector shared that the captain is progressing and was "optimistic" about the likelihood of participating.

"We're aware that the clock is ticking and multiple considerations at play, not only the back issue, but other factors as well," Bailey remarked.

"We're encouraged. There's strong faith that he's going to play a major part. Ideally from the opening match. Otherwise, then we'll pick it up."

Past Concerns

He was sidelined Australia's limited-overs series against New Zealand and India last month after examinations confirmed a lower back issue.

He has a history of recurring issues, with setbacks in multiple past seasons forcing him out of several home seasons in a limited period.

The bowler mentioned he would be bold in recovery efforts in his recovery plan to make the squad for the Ashes.

He mentioned that it was unclear if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his comeback but conceded it was "pressing" for him to recover fully for the opener.

Alternative Arrangements

If he's unavailable, ex-skipper Smith will take over the captaincy.

Versatile player Green was withdrawn recently from the national team for their limited-overs matches against the Asian giants as a precautionary measure because of an abdominal issue.

The selector characterized it as a "minor" injury and confirmed that he'll feature in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "well-prepared to be ready to bowl."

"We put so much time has gone into creating the schedule for him to participate for the first Test as an dual-role player," Bailey explained.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the starting games regardless. The way he swings the bat in limited-overs, if it causes any delay for another day, the choice was made to approach this more conservatively."
