Joseph Parker & Fabio Wardley Set for ‘All or Nothing’ Showdown with Shot at Oleksandr Usyk on the Line
Boxing has been a real slump this season, with limited compelling matchups and considerably fewer compelling bouts than typical. The possibility of a serious and intriguing heavyweight contest between Joseph Parker and Fabio Wardley at the iconic O2 Arena brings a measure of relief to the struggling sport. The victor will almost certainly face Oleksandr Usyk next year. In contrast, the unsuccessful boxer is expected to regret the inevitable erosion of their hard-won plaudits.
Danger and Risk Envelop This Clash
Parker is on a hot streak since his most recent setback to Joe Joyce three years previously. The New Zealand veteran, who secured a world title in 2016, has been revitalized by his change in coaching to the influential Andy Lee. He has triumphed in six straight bouts, earning special praise for the poised way in which he defeated Deontay Wilder, opponent Zhilei Zhang, and Martin Bakole.
Wardley has carefully assembled his undefeated streak over 20 contests, while demonstrating incredible force against Frazer Clarke in a second encounter last season, and, this season, when he knocked out Justin Huni with one devastating blow. But Clarke took Wardley to the absolute limit when their grueling initial bout ended in a tie – and Huni was dominating on the scorecards on all three official tallies before he was knocked out cold in the 10th round.
The Understated Allure of The Two Boxers
The low-key appeal of both men is enhanced by the fact that they now stand on the verge of a championship opportunity. Yet each has weaknesses. This is Parker's fortieth professional bout and, apart from three losses, he has been dropped multiple times by multiple challengers. He consistently rises but Wardley punches with greater force than any fighter he's fought – with the exclusion of Wilder who seemed a shadow of a power puncher when Parker swept to a clear unanimous decision in December 2023.
Wardley, a former white-collar slugger, who only started boxing when he was 20, had no amateur boxing history and has consistently faced skepticism over his skill set. But he is similarly close to a world title challenge.
“This is the most important contest, at the moment, in the heavyweight class. These two boxers have accepted the challenge when neither fighter was required to take this bout. Joe Parker is the WBO interim champion and they have formally instructed Usyk to fight him, but he was hurt. Joseph insists on fighting.
“Wardley is also in a fantastic position and he could have just waited for his chance. He said ‘No, thanks.’ He chose to box – and versus Parker because it offers him an opportunity to jump the queue.”
Parker’s Perspective
Parker, set to be 34 in January, said: “It's win or go home. I am not focused on a loss. I honor my adversary and what he has done and the way he's trained for this fight. But I am on a different level and I am planning to demonstrate it on Saturday.”
Wardley's Stance
Wardley, approaching 31, and he said: “It is a massive night for the pair of us. It is undoubtedly the largest contest of my boxing journey and the biggest fight of my life. But every time I step up I rise to the occasion. Saturday will be no different. The divide between Parker's status and my perceived standing has been a frequent topic during my entire career.
“He has vast experience for a long time, with a numerous contests on his record. Certainly not is he an senior boxer but he has been in the sport for a while and had some heavy fights. I too have faced intense battles and I realize they cause wear and tear. He has been in a far greater number of those than me.”
The Final Verdict
But the suspicion remains that Parker will be too experienced, and too skilled, for Wardley. He is expected to triumph a bruising battle with the conviction that he is the prime candidate for Usyk – the undisputed best in the division by a clear gap.
