Critical Role Campaign 4 Introduces the Soldiers Party

Since the launch of the fourth campaign, recently appointed game master Brennan Mulligan has kept fans guessing with extensive world-building, a wide array of characters, and a thrilling plot including divine entities, demons, and dark forces growing in power within the urban setting.

Warning: Revealing details for the third episode of the new season lie ahead.

The Soldiers Table Revealed

The third episode concluded with a dramatic pause and introduced the first table of heroes who will separate from the main group to begin their independent quest, apart from the additional parties.

This warrior group includes the determined fighter (brought to life by the voice actor), Thimble (Laura Bailey), the strong-willed figure (the cast member), Wicander (the player), and Kattigan Vale (the actor).

Dividing the Cast

Considering 13 cast members, it was obvious from the outset that having everyone at one table would be unworkable.

This explains, the initial installments of this story serve as an Overture, weaving together the individual narratives before splitting into three separate parties: Fighters, Schemers, and Seekers.

What Defines the Soldiers Table

According to the DM, the Soldiers table is for adventurers who are drawn to a traditionally charged combat and conflict-driven story mode where diplomatic options are rare.

Initially, characters like the squeamish cleric Wicander Halovar might appear out of place, but the events of episode 3 demonstrate why these specific adventurers are perfectly fit for the combat party.

Motivations for Departure

For one thing, the party has a clear idea where to go next after a brutal opening clash with the antagonists.

An old friend of Thjazi—whose demise kicked off the narrative’s action—used The Crow Keepers for his own means, invading the hidden lair, assaulting the character, and taking all the powerful objects to sell off.

The antagonist then paid off his liabilities and fled to a Halovar stronghouse in the remote area, above Dol-Makjar, with Teor’s brother pursuing him.

Individual Reasons

Secondly, each adventurer has a personal reason to depart the urban setting:

  • The agile hero, as the companion and trusted friend, seeks vengeance.
  • Kattigan is familiar with the region and advises that it is a nasty place.
  • The warrior and The cleric, having resisted his house’s orders to kill Teor and instead rescued him, have no safe haven.
  • But, their status as prominent individuals in House Halovar could help the party reach places they typically wouldn’t be able to.
  • Furthermore, The fighter vowed a eternal obligation to The cleric for his rescue and will now go with him everywhere.

Pursued by Authorities

Finally, all of them are sought by the powers that rule the city for a range of causes, making lingering locally too risky:

  • Thimble and The hero are recognized lawbreakers.
  • The warrior and The healer defied the influential house and the horde of evil beings they are aligned with.
  • Teor is targeted for elimination by the clan.

This leaves them few options but to journey toward Timmony in pursuit of Casimir.

Future Episodes

According to episode three’s follow-up content, we discover that the warrior group won’t be around the following episode, leaving the other eight players to form the Seekers and Planners groups.

Fans can anticipate learning which adventurers will be in which group in the story’s last Overture episode, released on October 24.
