An Tale of Unexpected Kindness: When a University Student Allowed Me to Stay on Her Dormitory Floor
During 2006, My journey took me to the Australian capital for an admissions interview for medical school. I assumed to book lodging when I arrived, but upon reaching the city, a major event was taking place and every single budget hostels and cheap hotels were fully booked.
Hailing from Singapore, the idea crossed my mind maybe I could just sleep at the airport – but soon learned the local airport, unlike Singapore’s, is not open around the clock. Not knowing how to proceed and growing worried, I hopped on a bus into town and began walking in the direction of the casino, believing I might spend the night somewhere that stayed open through the night. This was not ideal in the best shape for nailing an interview the following day, yet, as a student on a tight budget, luxury accommodation was impossible.
Our society requires more individuals who show such kindness.
Apparently, I appeared confused since a female student noticed me walking aimlessly through the city center and wondered if I was OK. I shared my situation and without hesitation she offered I could sleep on the ground of her dormitory at ANU – an ideal turn of events, given that my my interview would take place the next morning. She went further by offering a meal: one of the stuffed baguettes she brought back her work shift. I was able to use the bathroom and a secure location to rest for the evening.
Looking back, I now understand what a big chance she accepted as a woman allowing a guy who was a complete stranger sleep on her floor. At that time I operated under a bubble of male privilege and not even thinking about things like that. As a dad now, it astounds me she took that chance – and remain very grateful.
I never did attending ANU, and I lost touch with her again, but I’ve never forgotten her selfless deed of kindness. My sincere desire is that karma has repaid her act of kindness abundantly. Our society requires more people who show such kindness.
